Just a handful of days separate me from my first taste of South America! The past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of preparation: getting paperwork in order, buying supplies, communicating with the team, making arrangements to be away from our admin roles for the next three months, and prayer, prayer, prayer!
For the first two months we’re away, David and I will be leading around 25 people across two expeditions in the Brazilian Amazon (you can still join us in August if you’re quick to apply :-D). We’ll be ministering to the Sataré-Mawé Indians, many of whom have been reached previously and evangelized, and have been asking us for deeper teaching and discipleship. To meet this important need David, and Jessica Lattimore, a fellow Overland missionary and Amazon expedition leader, have been working hard the past few months making arrangements with a native missionary to the region. Through this relationship we’ve arranged a pastors conference that will take place in July, giving the spiritual leaders in the region the much needed support and teaching they’ve been asking for. Along with ministering to the pastors we’ll also spend time pressing into other areas of the river with the aim of reaching more of the estimated 62 villages that remain unreached in the area.
The second Amazon expedition is a two week team, through August 2-16. We will start off in Manaus, head down river to Maues and then into the estuaries that feed the Amazon River. We will be continuing our evangelistic work amongst the Sataré-Mawé Indians and the Ribeirinho people. We’ll spend our time encouraging and discipling existing believers, ministering to locals, pioneering the Gospel into new areas and much, much more. Throughout both these expeditions we’ll be living off an Amazon river boat and working very closely with the local connections we have to strengthen the indigenous church.
From the Amazon we’ll head to Rio de Janeiro to continue making in-country connections, particularly for much needed translators for our work in the Amazon. From Rio we fly to Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the beginning of September where we’re taking part in a reconnaissance mission with Martin and Richelle Lopez, two key people at Overland Missions. We’ll be backpacking with them for two weeks in the mountains of Salta, pioneering the foundation for a continuing work in that area.
With all the travel that’s ahead of us, the known and the unknown, I encourage you to support us, the team, and the people we’re going to in prayer. You’ll find specific things to pray for on our Prayer & Praise page. Remember as you partner with us in prayer, ‘The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.’ James 5:16 NKJV. And if you feel disorientated about where exactly we’re going we made a little map for you on our home page!
We love you!
